After the death of Mahendrapala, the Pratihara kingdom began to decline. His successors struggled to maintain control over the vast empire. In the early 10th century, the Gurjara-Pratiharas faced several defeats, leading to a weakening of their power. As a result, many feudatory chiefs and provincial governors started asserting their independence. This caused the empire to disintegrate, eventually shrinking to the region around Kanauj. The weakening of Pratihara authority led to the division of their empire, with different regions coming under the control of the Chalukyas (Solankis) of Anhilwada, the Chandellas of Bundelkhand, the Paramaras of Malwa, the Chauhans of Sakambari, and the Gahadavalas of Southern Rajputana.
